🥬 What Makes This Smoothie Healthy?
The main ingredient, giving the smoothie its vibrant green colour, is kale. While kale doesn’t have any magical properties, it does give your body a boost of important nutrients, including:
- Plant-based protein
- Fibre
- Vitamins A, C and K
- Folate, a B-vitamin that is key for brain development
- Alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid
If you’re not a fan of kale, this smoothie is a great way to ease it into your diet. You’ll hardly even notice it’s there.

🥣 Ingredients
- Kale – The base ingredient of this smoothie. You can also substitute it with fresh spinach.
- Banana – Makes the smoothie super creamy and delicious. For a more refreshing drink, you can also use frozen banana pieces.
- Orange – Gives it a bright, refreshing flavour and a zesty undertone that balances the earthiness of the greens. You can also swap in a splash of orange juice.
- Flax meal – Flax meal, or ground flax seeds, are a great source of protein, healthy fats, including omega-3 fats, antioxidants and fibre, as well as some important vitamins and minerals. Plus, they make the smoothie even thicker and creamier. You can omit it if you want, or swap it for chia seeds.
- Milk – Every smoothie needs a liquid component to give it just the right texture. I love to use unsweetened almond milk in smoothies because of its neutral taste, but you can use any kind of milk you like, including dairy, coconut, oat or soy.
🗒️ How to Make a Green Smoothie
Simply place the banana, kale, orange, flax meal and milk in a blender and blend on high until smooth. It’s best to use a high-powered blender to achieve that perfectly smooth consistency. If you don’t have one, you might need to add more milk or water.
Pour the smoothie into glasses, garnish it with a slice of orange and serve right away.
💡 Extra Tips
This smoothie tastes great on its own, but it’s easy to customise to suit your preferences:
- For a extra creaminess – use frozen banana.
- To make it more refreshing – blend in a few ice cubes.
- For a protein boost – add a scoop of unflavoured or vanilla protein powder.
- For added nutrition – mix in chia seeds or a scoop of collagen.
