🍍 What Makes This a Detox Smoothie?
The number one rule for a detox smoothie is that it should be packed with good-for-you ingredients that are rich in nutrients and antioxidants. This smoothie mixes:
- Pineapple, which is high in antioxidants, digestive enzymes, vitamins and minerals. These can boost your immune system, ease digestion and suppress inflammation.
- Mango, containing prebiotic dietary fibre, which helps feed good bacteria in the gut, promoting good digestion and healthy gut.
- Cantaloupe melon, which is almost 90 percent water, making it a welcome addition to any smoothie, as it helps you to stay well hydrated.
- Passion fruit is a good source of key nutrients, fibre and antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation in the body.
🥤 Is Pineapple Detox Smoothie Good for Weight Loss?
If your plan is to eat exactly the same way you’re eating, and the only change would be adding one smoothie to your daily calorie intake, then drinking an extra smoothie a day will cause you to eventually gain weight.
So then why are smoothies considered so healthy, and why is everyone recommending them for weight loss?
Smoothies are high in fibre, which can keep you full for longer. Plus, they’re packed with important nutrients that your diet may otherwise be lacking, especially if you’re otherwise not eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.
So, if you choose to substitute your typical breakfast (or an unhealthy snack that you indulge in daily) with a smoothie, most likely you will eventually start to lose weight. Here is why drinking a smoothie a day can help you to lose weight:
- It’s very filling yet low in calories, helping you to stay away from unhealthy snacks.
- Certain nutrients can actually improve your metabolism, helping you to burn more calories.
- Fibre is good for digestion, and most smoothies will help you feel less bloated. While this isn’t actual weight loss, it does make you feel more confident in your body.
- Above all else, drinking healthy smoothies is an easy way to include more real food in your diet.
🥣 Ingredients and Substitutions
- Almond milk – I like to use unsweetened almond milk in smoothies because if its neutral flavour, but you can use any kind of milk you like, including soy, oat, hemp, or coconut milk. For an extra fruity smoothie, you can even use orange juice, or swap the liquid base with water for a lower-calorie smoothie.
- Pineapple – Both fresh or frozen pineapple pieces will work. I like to use frozen pineapple to make the smoothie extra thick and refreshing.
- Cantaloupe melon – I used freshly cut melon, which helps to slightly thin the smoothie with its high water content. You can use a different variety of melon as well, such as honeydew, galia or canary.
- Mango – Adding frozen mango makes the smoothie super creamy, almost like a sorbet. You can use fresh mango as well.
- Passion fruit – Provides a subtle tangy undertone. You can omit it if you don’t have it at hand, or swap it with a splash of passion fruit juice.
🗒️ How to Make a Detox Smoothie
The anatomy of any smoothie is fairly the same. You need to mix:
- Base liquid: Common liquids for healthy smoothies usually include coconut water, coconut milk, almond milk, dairy milk, hemp milk, apple juice, orange, juice, green tea, kombucha or even plain water. There are endless options for what to use as the base liquid. For this smoothie I used – almond milk.
- Base ingredients: These are the ingredients you can see and taste most distinctly. This detox smoothie actually has two base ingredients – pineapple and melon.
- Creaminess factor: Creamy smoothies are harder to resist. There are different ways to make a smoothie thick and creamy, from creamy fruits to nut butter and yogurt. The role in this smoothie goes to – mango.
- Flavour boost: This is the part of the smoothie that you can sort of taste, but aren’t sure what it is. The pairing that gives the smoothie that little something extra that doesn’t taste like the titular fruit. In this case – passion fruit.
