Why You’ll Love This Sunrise Smoothie
Summer just got even better. If you’re a fellow smoothie enthusiast, you’ll love this sunrise version of a classic flavour combo that is as easy on the eyes as it is on the palate. We all know strawberries and mangoes go great together, but this smoothie takes things to a whole new level. Here’s what I love most about it:
- Visually stunning: Layered like a tropical sunrise, this smoothie is perfect for sharing on Instagram—or just treating yourself.
- Naturally sweet and fruity: Packed with real fruit, no weird powders or supplements.
- Customisable: You can easily make it vegan or add detox-boosting extras (see tips below).
- Hydrating and light: A refreshing choice for breakfast or post-workout.
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Frozen strawberries – Keeps the bottom layer thick and vibrant. You can also use fresh strawberries and add more ice if needed.
- Mango – Mango creates the upper layer of the mango sunrise smoothie. Either fresh or frozen will work.
- Honey – Adjust to taste depending on how sweet your fruit is. Use agave or maple syrup for a vegan smoothie.
- Milk – Helps blend the strawberry layer into a creamy base. Dairy and plant-based milk alternatives all work well. I personally love to use coconut milk for tropical vibes.
How to Make a Sunrise Smoothie
Like a classic tequila sunrise, this strawberry mango smoothie goes from pink at the bottom to a bright yellow at the top. You make this happen by first pouring in your strawberry smoothie, and then following up with a layer of mango smoothie. Don’t worry, they won’t mix, because the bottom one will be just a bit thicker to hold the mango one on top. If you want, you can finish off by giving it a gentle stir to create that eye-catching swirly effect.
Sunrise Detox Smoothie Tips
Looking to turn this into a gentle detox smoothie? Try one of the following:
- Include a handful of spinach in the mango layer—it’ll alter the colour slightly, but boost the nutrition.
- Add a teaspoon of chia seeds or ground flax for fibre and omega-3s.
- Blend in a small piece of fresh ginger for a metabolism-boosting kick.
Make It Vegan
This refreshing sunrise smoothie includes only mangoes, strawberries, milk and honey. To make it vegan, you can easily use any plant-based milk, such as soy milk, almond milk, oat milk, hemp milk or (my personal favourite for this smoothie) coconut milk. Replace honey with agave syrup, maple syrup, or any preferred liquid sweetener to make it 100% plant-based.
Fresh or Frozen Fruits?
You can go either way, but I picked frozen strawberries for the bottom layer to make it nice and thick with little effort, and fresh mangoes for the top one. If you like your smoothies extra frosty, you can add a few ice cubes to the mango layer as well.

Sunrise Smoothie FAQs
Yes! Blend both layers and store them separately in jars in the fridge. Layer just before serving for the best visual effect.
Absolutely. Just reduce or skip the ice cubes so the consistency doesn’t get too thick.
While not strictly a detox smoothie, this fruit-packed smoothie is hydrating, full of fibre and vitamin C, and can support a healthy morning routine. If you’re looking for a detox smoothie, try this green detox smoothie, spirulina superfood smoothie or pineapple detox smoothie.

Strawberry Mango Sunrise Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 ⅓ cup (190 g) frozen strawberries
- 1 tablespoon agave syrup, honey if vegan
- ⅔ cup (165 g) milk, I used coconut milk
- 1 whole mango, cubed
- 3-4 (3) ice cubes, optional
Instructions
- In a high-speed blender, combine frozen strawberries, milk, and your sweetener of choice (honey or agave). Blend until smooth. It should be thick enough to hold the next layer. Pour into a glass.
- Add the mango cubes (and ice if using) to the blender. Blend until smooth.
- Slowly pour the mango blend over the strawberry layer. Because the bottom is thicker, the two layers will naturally stay separated. For a marbled effect, swirl gently with a straw or spoon.
- Enjoy your beautifully layered sunrise smoothie while it’s cold and fresh.
