This strawberry breakfast protein smoothie is sweet, refreshing, and made with only 3 ingredients. Low in fat and packed with protein, fibre, calcium and vitamin C, itโ€™s the perfect on-the-go breakfast option.

Tell Me More About This Strawberry Breakfast Protein Smoothie

    • Flavourย โ€“ sweet but not too sweet, very much resembling a strawberry flavoured yogurt
    • Textureย โ€“ extra thick and creamy, yet cool and refreshing, especially if you use frozen fruits or add ice
    • Benefitsย โ€“ high in protein, fibre, vitamin C, and calcium
    • Perfect as an on-the-go breakfast or a healthier sweet treat

How to Make the Perfect Smoothie

Most smoothies involve three basic components, and all you need to do is experiment with what suits you best.

Liquid โ€“ to keep your healthy smoothie super low calorie, you can simply use water. Other low fat and low calorie options, with a much richer flavour, include almond, oat or soy milk, or even coconut milk.

Fruit โ€“ this is the bit thatโ€™s usually the most fun. You can use any fruit or combination of fruits you like; the key is in balance. For example, if you want a creamier, fuller texture, use fruits like bananas or mangoes, and if you want a lighter, more refreshing drink, berries are your best friend.

Body โ€“ if youโ€™re making a protein smoothie, the body is where you get the protein in. A very popular and straightforward option is protein powder, though I prefer yogurt, which might be less rich in protein, but makes a world of difference when it comes to taste and texture.

Topping โ€“ completely optional and entirely up to you. I only like to use toppings when making a thicker, eat-with-a-spoon smoothie, so I didnโ€™t use it for this breakfast protein smoothie.

Ingredients Youโ€™ll Need to Make This Strawberry Breakfast Protein Smoothie

    Strawberries

Packed with vitamin C, manganese, potassium and antioxidants, strawberries are not only delicious but good for you as well. I like to use frozen strawberries because theyโ€™re ripe and delicious no matter what time of the year youโ€™re making the smoothie.

    Plant-Based Milk

Add more or less milk to make the smoothie as thick or thin as you want it. I used almond milk in the photos here, but you can use your favourite plant-based milk โ€“ soy, oat and rice all taste great.

    Vegan Probiotic Yogurt

Yes, plant-based yogurt can be probiotic, and you can read all about probiotics below. For this recipe I used unsweetened Greek soy yogurt.

    What Are Probiotics?

Your body is full of bacteria, most of which resides in your gut. The trick, though, is not in eliminating it, but in maintaining the right balance of good and bad bacteria. When you lose some of your good bacteria, for example by taking antibiotics, youโ€™re more likely to suffer from poor digestion, weak immune system, skin problems, and even weight gain.

You can find probiotics in supplements and certain foods. Probiotic foods include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, tempeh, kimchi, miso, and more. This recipe for strawberry yogurt smoothie calls for probiotic yogurt, which is the essential ingredient if you want to enjoy it for its gut-healing properties.

    Is Probiotic Yogurt Vegan?

It can be.ย Probioticsย are created during a bacterial fermentation process regardless of whether or not the source of yogurt is dairy or non-dairy. A lot of non-dairy probiotics are soy-based, but there are also other plant-based options out there, such as almond or coconut.

Many commercially available yogurts, dairy and non-dairy, however, are pasteurised, so you need to pay attention to the ingredients on the label to make sure your yogurt is made with probiotics.

Make Your Own Vegan Probiotic Yogurt

Did you know you can make your own plant-based yogurt? Itโ€™s a lot easier than it sounds, and requires no special equipment or knowledge. Hereโ€™s a quick guide onย how to make vegan yogurt.

    Strawberry Smoothie Q&A

Can I make this smoothie ahead of time?

Yes, you can make this up to 24 hours ahead. Store it in an airtight jar or bottle in the fridge.

Can I make this smoothie ahead and freeze it?

Yes! Prepare the smoothie as directed, pour into an ice cube tray, and freeze for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, add the smoothie ice cubes to the blender with a little water or almond milk, and blend.

    Is this smoothie vegan?

Yes if you make it with plant-based yogurt. I used unsweetened Greek soy yogurt.

Should I use fresh or frozen strawberries?

Either will work well. If youโ€™re using frozen strawberries, the smoothie will have a thicker consistency and be more refreshing. You can also use fresh strawberries and add a few ice cubes to make it thicker and cooler.
